‘Lightyear’ is a Summer Blast for Kids and Adults (Review)

Pixar's 'Lightyear' marks the beloved animation company's first feature film in nearly two years to be released theatrically. 'Soul,' 'Luca,' and 'Turning Red' were all sent straight to Disney+ for streaming during the pandemic. This film, with its connection to an existing film series that is the fourth-highest-grossing animated franchise in history, finds the company back on the big screen where they belong. And when I say big screen, let me encourage you to see this in IMAX if you can. Many large-format screens are sticking with 'Jurassic World Dominion' this weekend. 'Lightyear' should at least get matinees in most areas. This is the first time that Pixar has ever crafted a film with the full IMAX screen in mind. The full IMAX aspect ratio is used in multiple sequences. Those s...

Your Guide to the Virtual 2022 Tribeca Film Festival

The 21st annual Tribeca Film Festival kicked off this week in New York City and they've opted to continue an "at home" component. That's good news for those of us who don't live in the area or couldn't travel in to see some great independent films. There are more screenings for 2022 than last year that are only happening in-person, but Tribeca At Home will still allow you to watch over 100 movies and short films from anywhere in the United States. How to Attend Online There are four ways to buy passes for online screenings and the prices are the same as they were last for last year's Tribeca Film Festival. Tribeca At Home Shorts Pass: watch all of the festival's short films for $25. Tribeca At Home Awards Pass: watch any of the films that win awards at the end of the fes...

Mothica’s New Album Nocturnal Due July 1st

Alt-pop artist Mothica's highly anticipated sophomore album is set for release. Nocturnal will be available worldwide on July 1st. Along with the announcement she's dropped two new singles simultaneously. She'll be heading out on tour with Coheed & Cambria this summer but more on that in a moment. Mothica released her debut album Blue Hour in 2020. The project was inspired by the sky's final moments before darkness. She followed that up with an EP in 2021 called forever fifteen. According to a recent press release, on Nocturnal she focuses on nighttime and her strange relationship with sleep. A lot of the songs touch on darkness and being self-destructive. "Blue Hour’ was a transitional moment where I got sober. I was more of an emotional wreck, trying to figure out my life...

Breaking Waves: Fyoomz & “Invisible Touch”

"Wave exists in the collective subconscious of every avid electronic music fan. People who take an active interest in Wave are among those same fans, except they’re awake." — Donald // Fyoomz 🌊🌊🌊 (@fyoomz) April 12, 2022 Twitter It was my lucky day on Tuesday. When I woke up, I felt well enough to write, AND I found a new Fyoomz drop--all at once!! Let me tell you—“Invisible Touch” is a whole vibe. It kept me going literally all day. You should check it out, especially if you need an intense pick-me-up. Sub Urban Releases Provocative New Video For “Bandit”

Sub Urban has released a new video for "Bandit". The standout track is featured on his new album Hive. Anticipation for the album drop had been building and Sub Urban didn't disappoint. After all, he's earned over a billion streams and YouTube views on his songs and videos, all without ever having released a full-length album. Hivehttps://suburban.lnk.to/hive Sure, music gets released a little differently these days with many artists focusing on single releases and EPs. However, in this writer's opinion, a full-length album gives a musician a full canvas to paint on. And that's exactly what Sub Urban has done with Hive. An 'intricately arranged vaudevillian thriller' is the best way to describe it. In other words, if you're looking for a collection of light-hearted pop songs, yo...

‘Crimes of the Future’ is Frustratingly Inert (Review)

Let's get one thing absolutely clear - David Cronenberg's 'Crimes of the Future' was my most anticipated film of the year. To prepare for it, I rewatched 'eXistenZ' and 'Crash.' Those turned out to be the two closest parallels in his oeuvre to this, but the concept here is better than the execution. The storyline is frustratingly inert, succeeding mostly on the strength of the incredible cast. Viggo Mortensen and Léa Seydoux star in David Cronenberg's 'Crimes of the Future' (Neon) Viggo Mortensen and Léa Seydoux star as Saul and Caprice. In a strange not-so-distant future they're performance artists. She's a former trauma surgeon and Saul has the unique ability to form new organs in his body. Not just any organs, but unknown organs that may or may not serve an evolutionary ...

Punk Rockers Handheld Pay Tribute To John Candy In New Music Video

Canadian punk rockers Handheld have delivered the John Candy tribute you might not have realized you needed. "Leaving Candyland" is a fun up-tempo homage to one of comedy's true legends. The music video features band members dressed up as a number of Candy's classic movie and television characters. How many can you spot? A Canadian Tragedy is the first new album in 14 years from Handheld. They formed in 1998 out of Ontario and are known for their loud, fast, and melodic punk rock jams. Fans of bands like Bad Religion, NOFX and Rise Against will feel right at home. We're hearing a hint of Blink 182 on "Leaving Candyland" too. And it's not just what appears to be a similar sense of humor. Handheld released six albums/EPs over a 10-year period from 1998 to 2008. From there they wen...

‘The Northman’ Seeks Revenge (Review)

Maverick filmmaker Robert Eggers ('The Witch,' 'The Lighthouse') returned to the theaters earlier this Spring with his breathtaking third feature, 'The Northman.' Expanding far beyond the independent and intimate vibe of his earlier work, 'The Northman' is a full-scale, big budget Viking saga based on a legend that actually inspired Shakespeare's 'Hamlet.' The powerful script was co-written by Eggers and Icelandic author and songwriter Sjón, which explains how Eggers was able to get Björk out of cinematic retirement for a brief role here. She is just a small part of an epic tale that is aided by a top-notch cast. Alexander Skarsgård in 'The Northman.' (Focus Features) As a young child, Prince Amleth (played as an adult by Alexander Skarsgård) watches as his father King Aurvan...
