With The Punches New Album Discontent Due In May

It's been a while. But if the new single is any indication, it'll have been worth the wait. New York-based pop-punk outfit With the Punches has announced a new record deal and EP release along with a brand new single. Discontent will be the first new release from With The Punches in nearly nine years. "Stoneham Blues" is the lead single from the new EP and they've really delivered something special. The song confronts mortality in that, according to vocalist Jesse Vadala, it was loosely written about a few close friends who are no longer with us. I struggled like many do in processing death, especially those lost to addiction. We always wish for ways to protect the ones we love. When they leave abruptly, it can shatter so many lives. Some days we feel lost. Other days we shine ...

Netflix Doc Examines “all-American” Retailer Abercrombie & Fitch (Review)

'White Hot: The Rise & Fall of Abercrombie & Fitch' is a brand new Netflix documentary from director Alison Klayman ("Jagged"). While the company still exists in an altered form, clothing retailer Abercrombie & Fitch was an inescapable presence in malls across the country. No really, you couldn't escape it. If you were anywhere near it in the mall's footprint, you could smell their exclusive store scents wafting through the building and you could hear the bass of club remixes reverberating through the walls. If you were enticed through the doors by the often-shirtless young men who were hired as "models," you would see sexualized imagery on the walls, the shopping bags, and inside the A&F Quarterly magazine published by the company. It was "fast fashion" appealing t...

UK Alt-Rockers The Subways Release “You Kill My Cool”

The Subways are back with a vengeance. The UK alt-rockers have just released their new single "You Kill My Cool." The track is a fierce, guitar-driven rocker that will get your blood pumping. With its catchy chorus and pounding beat, "You Kill My Cool" is sure to be a crowd favorite. The band is set to include the track on their new album due this fall. The Subways debuted in 2005 when the average age of its members was just 18 years old. Veterans of the scene now, they've got four studio albums under their belt. And that includes work with legendary producer/drummer Butch Vig (Nirvana, Garbage, etc) on their sophomore release. Highlights include shows at New York City's Irving Plaza, Shaky Knees Festival in Atlanta, and The Fillmore in San Franciso. If you've never heard of these guys and you're a fan of alt-rock anthems, it's time to get on the bus. Photo Credit: Kevin J. WØLFDARLING Confront Mortality On New Single “ghost empire”

Genre-bending WØLFDARLING has returned with the release of a brand new single. "ghost empire" is a strong follow up to the previously released "send the sun my way". The introspective mid-tempo alt-rock tune is sure to evoke strong emotions from the listener when considering the intense subject matter. According to frontman Sam Urich, he started writing the song as he was enduring a challenging time in his life nearly a decade ago. He tapped into the raw emotions that go along with confronting a life-threatening illness all while dealing with the end of a serious relationship. You can hear my anguish, as well as my rage and terror when realizing that I was weakening by the day and had no idea how to keep myself from dying. I was sitting across from death, looking into&n...

Museum Of Light Drop “Soft Openings” Single

Seattle-based alt-rockers Museum of Light is prepping for the release of their debut album. After hearing their new single "Soft Openings", we can't wait to hear more from the band. Having just signed to Spartan Records, Horizon is set for release on June 10th. Museum of Light is made up of Ted Alverez on guitar and vocals, Rob Smith on drums, and Ezekiel Rudick on bass. Several things jumped out at me when listening to "Soft Openings". First of all, it was a one listen song, it didn't take much to get warmed up. Some tunes can take a few listens before I latch on to them. This one, I enjoyed right out of the gate. Second of all, I really enjoyed how they were able to balance both heavy and ambient tones. You can expect aggressive riffs mixing in with some dreamy vibes. Turns o...

HBO Doc Explores the Singular Focus of Tony Hawk (Review)

In the new HBO documentary 'Tony Hawk: Until the Wheels Fall Off,' we spend time with the most famous skateboarder on the planet. We also see him at his most vulnerable. The film, directed by Sam Jones ('I Am Trying To Break Your Heart') and produced by Mark and Jay Duplass, begins with a sequence of groan-inducing failures. As the opening credits roll, we watch for nearly five full minutes as Hawk freefalls countless times while practicing a skate trick. It's hard to watch, mostly because I think we want to view celebrity athletes as invincible gods who cannot do anything wrong. When you see the man who is arguably the greatest to ever grace the sport having consistent difficulty while he pushes himself physically, it opens your eyes to just how challenging it is to pull off. It's...
