Artist Spotlight: Shark4Sale

If you’re looking for a new artist to check out, then you’ve come to the right place: in this edition of ‘Artist Spotlight‘, MendoWerks Magazine sat down with Swiss wave artist, Shark4Sale. You may recognize Shark4Sale from his releases with Liquid Ritual, Tribal Trap, and Wave City – or perhaps, through his participation in a few years’ worth of wave wardubs on SoundCloud.

If you’re unfamiliar with Shark4Sale, then get yourself ready for some music that is perfect for feelsy, crying-in-the-club moments. In other words, one of the most intriguing things about his music is that no matter how much drama Shark4Sale manages to pack into a given song, there’s still this lovely, soothing undercurrent that’s present through much of his work.

After spending some time with his discography, it’s clear that Shark4Sale is an expert at crafting organic-feeling builds that result in the perfect amount of emotional payoff each time. There’s great movement in a lot of his songs as well– like in “Absent Sky,” one of his earliest works.

All of the aforementioned is especially true in “Moonlight,” the song Shark4Sale released with Liquid Ritual in 2023. The journey between the gorgeous atmosphere present at the start of the track straight through to its satisfying conclusion is something that must be experienced, rather than written about. So if you’re new to Shark4Sale, I would definitely recommend starting with “Moonlight.”

Shark4Sale also has an impressive collection of collaborations under his belt already. Past collaborators include MitroWave, Berserkercrux, Altered Soul, Spyral, and others. He’s also got some exciting collaborations planned for the future as well… and perhaps, even a live show. (We can dream, can’t we?)

Sail through Shark4Sale’s discography while you learn more about this artist via the Q&A below.

Introducing… Shark4Sale! [Q&A]

AM: Hi! Thank you so much for connecting with us. Would you please take a moment to introduce yourself to our MendoWerks readers?

Shark4Sale: Hello, thank you for having me! I’m Shark4Sale, 20 years old, and from Switzerland. I’m a wave artist trying to showcase the emotive side of this wonderful, intricate genre!

AM: How would you describe the kind of music that you make?

S4S: My music may not have many of the classic characteristics of wave, but I try to maintain a strong focus point on the reese bass and giving it presence within the track, as it is one of the major building blocks of the genre. Most of my tracks are below 140 bpm– so emotive, chill and downtempo is the name of the game!

AM: Tell us a bit about your journey as an artist so far – how did you end up making music as ‘Shark4Sale?

S4S: Since around the age of ten, approximately four years into my piano classes, the idea of writing my own music felt rather intriguing. It wouldn’t be until 2020 (at age 16) that I would actually take the step to create my first few tracks and begin releasing. A big reason for this was my newfound passion for wave music, which my friend introduced me to in 2019.

Originally fascinated by the interesting sound design of skeler, I decided to finally take the leap into music production.

However, it was vowl., in 2018, who originally introduced me to this reese bass which I thought was the coolest sound ever, and I became obsessed with reese-focused tunes. As I learned more about the genre (wave, hardwave, witchhouse etc.) I also began discovering more artists, many of which have played a major role in the development of my sound and structure, as well as the subjects within my tracks.

Most notably, [my influences include] barnacle boi, brothel, Juche, Ytho, FATE, Øfdream, Altare, and the aforementioned vowl. and skeler. These and many more continue to be vital in the continuation of my sound and my journey in music, and more are added each year!

My main goal is to create something that connects with the listeners on an emotional level. We all have our ups and downs, and for me, music has always played a major role with which I associate specific events or milestones in my life. A specific song will take me back on a nostalgia-driven rollercoaster, and I am grateful to be able to store memories within specific tracks.

AM: Give us some exciting news—what is something coming up that you’re looking forward to?

S4S: I have numerous collaborations in the works, and I am working on expanding beyond my familiar key and BPM ranges, whilst maintaining my sound! I am very excited to showcase the combination of two different sounds, as one track!
