Wisconsin’s very own lo-fi alternative geek rock outfit, NEWSKI, has announced the release of its new album. “Friend Rock” is set to drop on April 7 via Nomad Union. The band is thrilled to share “Airplane,” a track featuring Guster’s Ryan Miller, from their forthcoming LP.
NEWSKI has earned critical acclaim for their previous album and book, It’s Hard to be a Person: defeating anxiety, surviving the world, and having more fun. The band has taken a unique approach to their new album, enlisting a friend/musical influence on every track.
This feature has brought together a diverse group of artists, including Matthew Caws (Nada Surf), Brian Vander Ark (The Verve Pipe), Miles Nielsen, H Burns (France), and many others. NEWSKI compiled this internationally collaborative album from their tiny house in Wisconsin.
NEWSKI On The Road
The trio is expected to hit American, European, and South African highways for a 100-date tour behind the new LP. Their lineup features Steve “Mr. Bicep” Vorass on drums, Sean “Tubs” Anderson on 4-string, and Brett Newski on guitars and vocals. Fans of NEWSKI can find all upcoming shows listed here.
NEWSKI emphasizes the importance of friendship in their work, stating that “We are nothing without our friends.” The band believes that collaborating with fellow “musician lifers” has been an incredible experience and has made them feel less lonely and insane. “Friend Rock” is an ode to the power of community and belonging to the right tribe, which is a catalyst for health and longevity. In regards to “Airplane,” the band had this to say.
Looking back to a magical time when MTV still played music videos…when prank calling truckers on CB radios was top-shelf entertainment, and when MGD was still considered a good beer, Airplane (feat ryan Miller of Guster) encapsulates those feelies. It’s a slow-cruiser perfect for car listening while traveling speeds between 25-61 MPH, on any day that ends in why.
