It’s been nearly three years since the release of Judah & The Lion’s last album. They return on June 10th with a new LP called. Revival. The result of their efforts in the studio is an album that shows off their growth as songwriters and performers.
Revival was recorded at Echo Mountain in Ashville, North Carolina. Members Judah Akers and Brian Macdonald found themselves attempting to recapture the innocence of their youth through music. After undergoing a lineup change last year they approached the recording of the new album by inviting longtime friends and touring musicians into the fold. The experience solidified Akers’ and Macdonalds’ partnership as a songwriting duo and added an element of freedom to the process that had been missing in recent years.
Much soul searching was done over the course of the pandemic while both had wildly different experiences. As a result, they’ve embraced the sadness and loss of the past few years while tapping into a renewed energy and spirit.
What Led To Revival
Akers found himself at home not being able to shut out his emotions. He was able to confront grief and anxiety in a way that was not possible being on the road. Being on tour non-stop would allow him to be distracted by the crowds of adoring fans. The advantage of spending time at home allowed him to develop a better understanding of what home could be.
Macdonald spent time abroad after his wife was accepted to a graduate program in Sweden. The couple left the home they had made together in the states. This forced him to get accustomed to the cold, lonely terrain of Visby Island, The result was a realization that home wasn’t a physical place for him.
When they reunited at Echo Mountain, they embraced change and the result is the new 11 song album Revivial. Three singles have already been unveiled from the project and we’re excited to hear more. “Find Another Reason Why” was featured in the Netflix movie The Starling featuring actors Melissa McCarthy and Kevin Kline. Then in February, they followed that up with “Take a Walk“.
Inspiration Behind “Happy Life”
On Friday they dropped a brand new single and music video. “HAPPY LIFE” was written as Akers and Macdonald were processing the departure of founding member Nate Zuercher who left the group late last year.
‘HAPPY LIFE’ was written while we were processing the sadness of our dear friend, Nate’s, departure from the band. We are so grateful to have him in our lives, and genuinely wish him the best as he moves forward with his own journey, outside of the band. Regardless of all the ups and downs we have been through together, the thing that matters most to us is Nate being happy.
