London-based independent folk-punk rockers Skinny Lister are gearing up for the release of the band’s highly anticipated sixth studio album. Titled Shanty Punk, the album is set to drop on Friday, October 20 via Xtra Mile Recordings. The LP promises a raucous blend of chest-thumping anthems, shanty sing-a-longs, and folk/punk classics that should be experienced in a live setting.
Shanty Punk is a concept album that perfectly represents Skinny Lister’s signature sound. Written and recorded by the band themselves, the album was mixed by Patrick Phillips and Daniel Heptinstall. The project was mastered at the iconic Abbey Road Studios by Frank Arkwright.
New Single
The album’s latest single, “Company Of The Bar,” captures the spirit of Skinny Lister’s dynamic live performances. The track merges three recurring themes in the band’s repertoire: drinking, traveling, and the sea.
It’s a celebration of the joy of spending time with friends and loved ones down at the local pub. With its driving energy and straightforward lyrics, “Company Of The Bar” embodies the ethos at the core of Skinny Lister’s music. The single is now available for streaming on various platforms.
Tour Dates This Fall
In conjunction with the album release, Skinny Lister has also announced a North American tour for October and November. The band will be fresh off their headline tour in the UK and a successful support run with Flogging Molly across the US. This time, they’ll be joined by label mates PET NEEDS and Bandaid Brigade for a series of electrifying shows on the east coast and in Canada. The tour kicks off on October 19 at Milkboy in Philadelphia, PA, and concludes with an appearance on Flogging Molly’s Salty Dog Cruise from November 8 to 13. Tickets are available for purchase now.
Here’s What To Expect On ‘Shanty Punk’
Shanty Punk, true to Skinny Lister’s style, is filled with stories that demand to be shared. From frontman Daniel Heptinstall’s arm-wrestling escapades in Dresden (“Arm Wrestling In Dresden”) to the band’s misadventures with a misguided driver on a US tour (“Pittsburgh Punch Up”), the album weaves together a tapestry of drunken anecdotes.
It also features moments of heartfelt introspection, such as the poignant tracks “Mantra” and album closer “Broken, Bruised & Battered.” Notably, Party George, Lorna and Max’s father and a cult legend among Skinny Lister fans makes an appearance on the album, singing his own composition, “William Harker.”
Strong Follow Up
Shanty Punk serves as a follow-up to Skinny Lister’s 2021 release. A Matter of Life & Love paid homage to life’s greatest pleasures. The new album aims to celebrate the essence of the band while reflecting on their growth and experiences. The album artwork stays true to Skinny Lister’s iconic imagery, featuring flagons, red shoes, boots, and Land Rovers. This comprehensive homage to the band’s identity further solidifies Shanty Punk as the quintessential Skinny Lister album.
With their energetic live performances and a collection of infectious songs, Skinny Lister continues to captivate audiences worldwide. The upcoming release of Shanty Punk, coupled with their North American tour, promises an exhilarating journey into the heart of their vibrant folk-punk universe.
