Tash Sultana has released their highly anticipated new single, “New York.” This musical prodigy wears many hats as a multi-instrumentalist, producer, singer-songwriter, engineer, and entrepreneur The song will be included on an upcoming EP set to be released later this year. The new material will be released under their own label, Lonely Lands Records.
In the midst of a pandemic that dealt a major blow to the music industry, Tash found peace in their studio, allowing creativity to flourish. “New York” was born from a deeply personal experience the artist had in the city itself.
Reflecting on that time Tash shares, “I will always remember a moment last year when I was in a really dark place. It was before my Pier 17 show in 2022, and it was one of the lowest points in my life, both professionally and personally. I was desperate for relief, searching for any way to escape the torment. I needed something to get me through the night.”
Finding Inspiration
The initial spark for “New York” came from a casual jam session recorded on Tash’s hard drive. Crafted in just one hour on a keyboard, this experiment took on a life of its own. Their signature style often conceals darker themes beneath upbeat melodies, and “New York” is no exception.
Tash shares their struggle with finding their place in the bustling metropolis, saying, “New York has always been a challenging city for me to navigate. There’s an intriguingly frantic energy that seems to drive people. The city never sleeps, and neither do its inhabitants. Amidst the chaos, how does one cope? Do they drown their sorrows, smoke them away, or numb the pain with medication? What do people do to make it through the night?”
New Direction
“New York” presents a departure from Tash’s previous work. In this song, we see a heavy emphasis on beat production and sample manipulation. The track offers listeners a glimpse into their evolving musical approach.
The artist remains enigmatic about the true meaning of the song, teasing, “It’s not as straightforward as it sounds. I’m weaving a tale, and it’s far from a happy one. ‘Cover me in sugar just to get me through the night’ alludes to the act of self-medication as a coping mechanism, something many people resort to in society.”
Summer Tour Dates
In June and October of 2023, Tash will embark on an extensive 50-date international tour across the EU, UK, and North America. Fans should brace themselves for an awe-inspiring showcase of TASH’s genre-defying sound and electrifying stage presence.
