Toad The Wet Sprocket Frontman To Release New Solo Album

Phillips got his start as lead singer & songwriter for Toad The Wet Sprocket. They formed in the mid-1980s and rose to fame on the success of singles like “All I Want“, “Walk On The Ocean“, and “Fall Down“. What I didn’t realize until doing homework for this article was that their name was inspired by a Monty Python skit according to Rock & Roll True Stories. Like many quirky band names, it wasn’t meant to be permanent, but it stuck. And the rest, as they say, is history.

After releasing a series of hits in the 1990s, they went their separate ways in 1998. They reformed (part-time) in 2006 and made the reunion permanent in 2010. Their most recent album was released in the late summer of 2021, Starting Now.

Glen Phillips Solo Album

Phillips follows up his 2016 solo effort Swallowed by the New with an album focusing on gratitude, beauty, and staying present. When asked about the new single, he had this to say.

“Big Changes” is about what I think of as The Situation — the changing environment, the growing gaps between ideologies and realities that make healthy debate almost impossible… The Situation invites The Conversation, which is usually just a litany of all that is wrong with the world and how we feel hopeless to change any of it. The second verse of the song is about what I see as the start of changing things — love, wonder and tears. I’m not always great at this. I’m as good at doom scrolling as the next guy, but I write songs like this to remind me to take my head out of the sand more often than I would otherwise.
