SXSW 2022 Film Dispatches, Vol. 2 (Reviews)

The 29th edition of the SXSW Film Festival has been back in-person (and online) this week in Austin, Texas, for the first time in three years. With nearly 100 feature films on the schedule and 76 World Premiere screenings happening over the course the week, there are plenty of opportunities to be entertained. With today’s dispatch, I'm going to cover a few more films that I really enjoyed this week. When it comes to festivals, I tend to gravitate to the documentaries. I already covered a few in my previous post, but here are some more to keep an eye out for in the months ahead. Kids In The Hall: Comedy Punks Five wild and crazy Canadian guys formed a comedy troupe in 1984. For this documentary, they head back to The Rivoli in Toronto where their earliest shows began and talk abo...

South Park To Celebrate 25th Anniversary With Epic Red Rocks Concert

South Park is one of America's longest-running series. They'll be celebrating a quarter-century on air with a big show featuring Trey Parker & Matt Stone, Primus, and Ween. This one-night-only event will take place Wednesday, August 10th at Red Rocks Amphitheater. The ticket reservation period is underway now and will close soon. South Park debuted on Comedy Central on August 13th, 1997, and has gone on to win a number of Emmy Awards along with a Peabody Award. The show revolves around the misadventures of Kyle, Stan, Cartman, Kenny, and a number of other hilarious characters in the fictional Colorado town of South Park. The show was the first weekly program to earn the TV-MA rating meaning it's intended for mature audiences only. South Park has garnered controversy along the...

Moore Kismet Announces Debut Album Release Set For June

At just 17 years old, up and coming EDM artist Moore Kismet is set to take the music world by storm. Just last year they became the youngest act ever to perform at both Lollapalooza and Electric Daisy Carnival in the same summer. Now, with a debut album on the way in June and shows planned through the summer at some of the world's biggest music festivals, it's time to get to know Moore Kismet. According to a recent press release, it was back in 2019 that heads started turning after Moore Kismet earned a spot as a finalist at A-Trak's Goldie Awards. In 2020, recognition as one of Billboard's 21 under 21 followed. Significant festival dates were up next in 2021 keeping the positive momentum going. But just who is Moore Kismet? Born Omar Davis, this interview from Blackbookmag shines...

With nearly 100 feature films on the schedule and 76 World Premiere screenings happening over the course the week, there are plenty of opportunities to be entertained. With today's dispatch, I'll take a look at some of the best documentaries I've caught so far during the festival and I'll be back later in the week with more updates. The Pez Outlaw Before becoming obsessed with the wide variety of international Pez dispensers available overseas, Steve Glew had never been out of the country. Living with his family in rural Michigan and working in a factory as a machinist was a means to an end, but then his OCD manifested itself in collecting all...

Jukebox The Ghost Collab w/Andrew McMahon On New Single “Wasted”

Piano pop trio Jukebox the Ghost has released a new single "Wasted". The uptempo song features prolific singer/songwriter Andrew McMahon. He not only composed but sings on the track too. Along with the single, details on their upcoming sixth studio album have emerged. This comes on the heels of the release of the first two songs off the new album Cheers. "Romona" and the title track "Cheers!" are part of a three-year recording process. Jukebox The Ghost opted to self-produce the new album which is set to be released on May 27th. Their 2018 release Off To The Races spawned the catchy "Everybody's Lonely" which saw airplay on radio stations across the country. While not a major hit, the song opened a lot of doors for the talented trio and set them up for a potential breakthrough wit...

Wilderado Announce Summer Tour With Mt. Joy

Dates are their current tour are selling out. Their new single "Head Right" is heating up on radio stations. And they've just announced a summer tour with Mt. Joy. Things are definitely headed in the right direction for Tulsa Oklahoma natives Widerado. Now based in Los Angeles, it's been two years since Wilderado headlined a nationwide tour. Pent-up demand has resulted in sold-out shows across the country while many have been moved to larger venues. The tour is in support of their self-titled debut album which was released last fall. The album was produced by heavy hitters, James McAlister (Taylor Swift), Chad Copelin (LANY), and Angelo Petraglia (Kings of Leon). The band began in 2015 when members Max Rainer and Tyler Wimpee met through mutual friends. From there they started ...

The BRKN Drop New Music Video For The Infectious “Not The Same”

Denver-based indie rockers The BRKN are back with a new single and music video. "Not The Same" will reel you in on the first listen. The accompanying music video is a performance piece and the vibe reminds me of The 1975 circa 2013. The band consists of Jacob Cade on vocals and guitar. Mike Bokenkamp and MJ Younkers hold down the rhythm section on drums and bass, respectively. They've just kicked off one of their biggest tours to date with The Dangerous Summer. They'll be heading overseas later this year for shows in the United Kingdom and Europe. The BRKN made their debut in the spring of 2020 with the EP No. 3 and followed that up with the Come Outside release in 2021. This year has been off to a great start for the group with the release of their "Coffee" single in January....

‘The Andy Warhol Diaries’ Come to Life on Netflix (Review)

The promotional tagline for 'The Andy Warhol Diaries' is "the art you know, the artist you don't." Director Andrew Rossi ('Page One: Inside the New York Times') and executive producer Ryan Murphy bring us a six-part docuseries that takes Warhol's own diaries and brings them to life using his own voice. Unlike Morgan Neville who generated controversy last year with the 'Roadrunner' release when it was revealed that his team had used artificial intelligence to manipulate Anthony Bourdain's voice to perfectly narrate the documentary, this project had the full approval of the Warhol Foundation to use a similar technology. Rossi recently told Entertainment Weekly, “To fully appreciate the radical vulnerability that Andy shares in the Diaries, I felt that we needed to hear the words ...

Alice In Chains, Breaking Benjamin & Bush Announce Summer Tour

Rock heavyweights Alice In Chains and Breaking Benjamin are set to tour this summer with special guests Bush. This three-headed beast of a tour is sure to please fans across the country who are hungry for some rock & roll. This will be one of those concerts that you'll want to skip the extra hour of tailgating in the parking lot. The lineup is strong from top to bottom. Tickets for the 30-city run will go on sale Friday at 10 AM. Live Nation will present a majority of the shows and tickets can be found here via Ticketmaster. This will be the first tour for Alice in Chains in more than three years. Founding Alice In Chains member Sean Kinney has this to say about the tour according to a recent press release. “We’re looking forward to finally hitting the road again this summer. It’s...

Cowboy Junkies Prep New Album “Songs of the Recollection”

Cowboy Junkies are pulling out all the stops for their new album. They're reinterpreting classics from artists like Neil Young, The Cure, David Bowie, and others for "Songs of the Recollection". The album is due March 25th and features songs that inspired its members at different points in their lives. The band, formed in the mid-80s is still together with the original lineup intact (which seems to be a rarity these days). It's a family affair with siblings Michael Timmins on guitar, Margo Timmins on vocals, and Peter Timmins on drums. A lifelong friend of Michael, Alan Anton rounds out the lineup playing bass. Worth mentioning is the fact that they have welcomed a number of guest musicians along the way including multi-instrumentalist Jeff Bird who has played on all albums but the fi...
