“Together Together” was acquired for release by Bleecker Street who bought it before its Sundance Film Festival world premiere earlier this year, where it was nominated for the Grand Jury Prize at the Sundance Film Festival in the Dramatic category.
After a decent start at the box office a few weeks back that has already seen it sell over $1.2 million worth of tickets, Nikole Beckwith’s second feature film is now available for home viewing.
It stars Ed Helms (“The Office”) as Matt, a single man in his 40s who has been unlucky in love and finds himself desperate to be a father. Patti Harrison, who is an absolute riot on Hulu’s “Shrill,” stars as Anna, a young woman who Matt hires to be his surrogate.
We rarely get to see a movie about a platonic relationship between a man and a woman and Beckwith, who wrote and directed, really excels at capturing something that begins in essentially a transactional manner and blossoms into a genuine friendship. These are two people who grow to care about each other in a very intense way, but romance is nowhere near the equation.
One of the more intriguing elements of the story is having a middle-aged man who has decided to stop waiting for love to make his dream of being a dad a reality. He’s not particularly concerned with how his family and friends will respond, he just knows that he has the money to make it happen in a different way.
While the storyline between Helms and Harrison is the backbone of the film, we’re treated to an exceptionally funny supporting cast includes SNL alum Nora Dunn, Tig Notaro, Rosalind Chao, and Julio Torres as Anna’s outspoken co-worker, Jules.
“Together Together” is a refreshing and original independent gem that is available as of today to rent or own from all major digital retailers. 4K Ultra HD is available from iTunes and Vudu.
