Ian Flanigan has released ‘Through the Darkness,’ a new song with a story that dates back six years.
Flanigan originally wrote the song for the graduating class of 2020. At the time, students were entering adulthood during a period filled with fear, loss and uncertainty. However, the song was never officially recorded. Six years later, Flanigan returned to it. He says the circumstances may have changed, but the uncertainty behind the song still feels familiar.
“I wrote Through The Darkness for the graduating class of 2020, when the world was filled with fear, loss, and uncertainty. I kept thinking about the young people stepping into adulthood without knowing what came next. Six years later, that feeling hasn’t disappeared, it just looks different. That’s why I finally recorded this song. My hope is that it reminds anyone facing an uncertain season that even the smallest step forward is still a step toward the light,” Flanigan said.
Ian Flanigan Brings “Through the Darkness” to Life
Flanigan took on several roles during the recording process. He produced and engineered the song while also handling lead vocals, acoustic guitar, electric guitar and synthesizer. David Ruberto plays drums, while Juan Solorzana adds pedal steel guitar. Sean Rubin plays bass, and Nisa Addina contributes violin.
Justin Guip mixed the track, continuing a collaboration with Flanigan that dates back to the Give Me Color EP. The three-time Grammy-winning engineer and producer has worked with artists including Levon Helm and Hot Tuna. Dave McNair mastered ‘Through the Darkness.’ David Ross and Phil Guerini served as executive producers.
The new single is also getting satellite radio exposure. ‘Through the Darkness’ and a live version of the song have both appeared on SiriusXM’s Radio Margaritaville.
From The Voice to Blake Shelton Collaboration
Flanigan reached a national audience in 2020 as a contestant on Season 19 of NBC’s The Voice. He competed as a member of Blake Shelton’s team and advanced to the season finale. Their relationship continued after the show. In 2021, Flanigan released ‘Grow Up, featuring Shelton. The song marked Flanigan’s debut single with Reviver Records. Flanigan and Shelton later performed the track together on The Voice.
‘Grow Up’ went on to reach No. 5 on the U.S. iTunes chart, according to Flanigan’s official website.
Ian Flanigan Returns to Poughkeepsie
Flanigan will return to the Hudson Valley this fall for The Sound of Nashville in the Hudson Valley’s Queen City. The concert takes place Tuesday, October 6, at 7 p.m. at The Bardavon in Poughkeepsie. The event will benefit Mental Health America of Dutchess County.
Flanigan joins a lineup featuring Craig Morgan, Maggie Rose, Jake Banfield and Brooke Moriber. MHA of Dutchess County and Reviver Entertainment Group are presenting the show. Tickets range from $100 to $250.
For ‘Through the Darkness, the road from writing to release took six years. While the moment that inspired it has passed, Flanigan says the song’s central idea remains the same. Even during an uncertain season, a small step forward can still be a step toward the light.
